Riegersburg

The medieval Riegersburg, an impressive landmark of Eastern Styria, is located on a 482 m high and steep volcanic rock and offers a wonderful panoramic view of the south-east Styrian landscape. For centuries the castle was considered impregnable, and even today it inspires respect for its numerous visitors.

Begin your exploration of the Riegersburg on foot along a centuries-old mystical path through castle gates, along fortification walls or "climb" the castle comfortably with the modern lift on the north side of the castle.

The castle has 4 km long defensive walls with 11 bastions and 7 gate buildings, which enclose the 15 hectare rock plateau. Once referred to as the "strongest fortress in Christendom", the Riegersburg formed an important part of the Styrian eastern wall against military incursions by the Magyars and Turks. The castle could never be captured!

The Riegersburg has been privately owned by the princely Liechtenstein family since 1822 and is one of the best preserved medieval castles in Europe.

When visiting the castle you can see the exhibitions "Sagenhafte Riegersburg - Legendäre Frauen" in the state rooms and "Hexen und Zauberer" in the basement.
